May 2026: Turn it Up - Micah Thunder Blends Healing and Heritage Into the Sound of the Korean Cowboy

Music has always been a place of reflection for New Mexico singer-songwriter Micah Thunder. Through deeply personal lyrics, emotional storytelling, and a sound rooted in both vulnerability and resilience, Thunder has created music that does more than entertain—it connects.
Known to many fans as the “Korean Cowboy,” Micah Thunder has built an artistic identity that embraces both his heritage and his New Mexico roots while exploring themes of healing, addiction, recovery, and self-discovery. “Well, I've got two different kinds of heritage,” Thunder explained. “So from my family, I've got Korean heritage, and then I'm born and raised here in New Mexico, so I got that New Mexico heritage.”
That combination became the inspiration for the Korean Cowboy persona and the broader artistic vision behind his music.
“Korean Cowboy was the way that I was bringing those two stories together,” he said. “And it's a project that really is just focusing on bringing that kind of neon Southwest storytelling into one place.” That storytelling became especially personal through his song “Day I Had to Change,” which introduced many New Mexico Entertainment viewers to his work through a featured music video segment. The song, pulled from his album Addict, reflects one of the darkest and most transformative chapters of his life. “For me, the things I was doing weren't working anymore,” Thunder shared. “There came a point where I was hitting rock bottom, and I needed to find ways to be accountable and rebuild my life.”
Rather than hide those struggles, Thunder channels them directly into his songwriting process. His music becomes both a confession and an exploration, allowing him to process his experiences while connecting with listeners facing similar battles. “My music comes from my personal lived experiences,” he explained. “It's a way for me to be able to start asking questions when I don't know the answer.”
That honesty continues in his upcoming album Wounded Healer, a project inspired by the idea that pain itself can become a source of empathy and guidance for others. “My new album is called Wounded Healer, and that's from a book that I love dearly,” Thunder said. “It reminds me that the hurt that I've gone through might actually be able to help teach other people about how to go through hard things.” The message behind the album centers on support, understanding, and the reminder that people are not alone in their struggles. “You're not alone, there's support, we can do this if we're together,” he said.
That transparency is what makes Thunder’s music resonate. There’s no attempt to polish over hardship or present a perfect image. He speaks openly about tragedy, survival, and rebuilding oneself. “I've gone through so much tragedy in my life,” he shared. “If that story doesn't get told, then it kind of gets lost.”
For Thunder, sharing those stories is about more than self-expression—it is about offering hope to others who may feel isolated.
“If I can share that story with somebody else, and it touches them, and it helps them make that next step, then that's something that I'm really hoping for,” he said. That sense of connection is exactly what he hopes audiences will take away from his music. “If they just feel like they're not alone, that somebody else is going through it, and that you can come out the other side stronger, that's my deepest hope.”
Thunder continues to perform throughout New Mexico, bringing his music to local audiences. Thunder’s work carries a sincerity that feels increasingly rare. His music does not aim to escape reality. It confronts it head-on while seeking meaning, healing, and connection.
