January 2024: Now Showing: Griselda

Many didn't realize the acting power of Sofia Vergara. Making a name for herself with her role as Gloria on the hit series Modern Family, Vergara could have become a typecast character. But others saw Vergara as more than a voluptuous woman who could fill up a dress. This Columbian-born actor will prove to audiences in her role as Griselda Blanco she is a force in the new Netflix limited series, Griselda. Vergara plays Griselda Blanco, The Godmother of Cocaine, who was prominent in the drug underworld dealing cocaine in Miami from the 1970s through the early 2000s. Underestimated at every turn, she proved deadly to many who crossed her path. The "Black Widow" was feared by many, starting her life of crime at 11. Her blood-soaked life would end in September of 2012 with two shots from an assassin's bullet in front of a meat market in Medellín.

With this explosive storyline, it might have surprised some to learn that the lead role would go to a woman who hasn't played a role of this caliber. But this talented actress transformed herself into the killer to dominate this six-episode series. Vergara is unrecognizable in the role, allowing viewers to focus on this moment of her performance, putting behind the preconceived notions they might have had of her abilities. She takes the role and runs with it, leaving audiences in awe of what they just witnessed.

The series is a powerful portrayal of how Blanco came into power, and Vergara rose to the challenge, bringing the devilish charm and fear that Blanco processed to the scene. Viewers will be impressed with the performances and the quality of the production. You'll find yourself disgusted by Blanco's actions, consistently putting everyone in danger, including her family and herself, to expand her enterprise by any means necessary.
