July 2026 - Hannah Joy Is Helping New Mexico Laugh a Little Louder

Grab a drink and learn a little bit about comedian Hannah Joy.

Comedy brought Hannah Joy to New Mexico, but the community convinced her to stay. Joy grew up in Dallas, Texas, and moved to Albuquerque after working in one of the country's busiest stand-up comedy scenes. Cities like Dallas, Austin, and Houston are known for producing top comedy talent, but that also means lots of competition and long waits to get on stage. New Mexico’s comedy scene was much smaller, but it gave her something she didn’t expect. "It is different," Joy said. "A lot of people here are way friendlier. I like that."

While Texas offered countless comedy clubs and nationally touring comics, Albuquerque gave her something equally valuable: community. "It's a lot slower-paced, a lot more chill," she explained. "And to be honest, the Albuquerque comedy scene has been a lot more woman-forward and female-empowering. I feel like women are booked more here than I was in Dallas. It's been a really, really great experience."

That welcoming atmosphere helped Joy's career flourish.

Since relocating, she's become one of New Mexico's most recognizable comedians. She regularly appears at local clubs while opening for and featuring nationally touring performers. Her growing résumé includes sharing the stage with comedians such as Zoltan Kaszas, Catherine Blanford, and Beth Stelling. Each experience has taught her something new about the craft.

"The first time they had me host was for Zoltan Kaszas," she recalled. "I did a little research and realized I needed to do my clean set."

The performance went well, leading to additional opportunities. She later hosted for Catherine Blanford before featuring for acclaimed comedian Beth Stelling, an experience she remembers fondly. "She was just so professional—hands down the coolest comedian I've ever worked for."

Those performances have helped establish Joy as one of New Mexico's rising comedy voices, while also reinforcing the community she values offstage. One of her biggest projects is helping organize the Albuquerque Funny Fiesta, an annual festival that’s now one of the top stand-up events in the state. Working behind the scenes appealed to another side of Joy's personality. "I love doing events and coordinating," she said. "It was just right up my alley."

Planning a festival means far more than booking comedians. It requires months of collaboration and scheduling. It also takes logistics and creative problem-solving to bring dozens of performances together into one seamless event.

For Joy, watching those moving pieces come together proved incredibly rewarding.

One moment, in particular, stands out. After months of planning, legendary comedian Marc Maron took the stage as the festival's headliner. "I had this surreal moment where I was sitting in the audience watching Marc Maron perform," she recalled. "I was like, 'Man, we did that.' I was so proud of us." Even with another successful Funny Fiesta behind her, Joy is already looking ahead. "We're already talking about 2027," she said. "I'll just say it's going to be bigger and better."

Her passion for creating opportunities extends beyond festivals. This summer, Joy stepped into another leadership role as host of Joker's Wild. The fifteen-week comedy competition takes place at Route 66 Casino's Stadium 66 Sports Bar. Inspired by the casino's successful Battle of the Bands series, Joker's Wild pits comedians against one another in a bracket-style tournament that runs throughout the summer.

"It's every Thursday night," Joy explained. "We have two comedians going head-to-head, and we also do an open mic before the contest."

The season concludes with one comedian taking home a $1,500 grand prize. More importantly, it gives emerging comics valuable stage time in front of live audiences. Every stand-up comedian knows that stage time is essential to improving.

Joy understands firsthand how important those opportunities can be.

Every stage, every audience, and every performance becomes another chance to sharpen material and build confidence.

That perspective shapes how she approaches both performing and producing.

Rather than viewing comedy as competition, she sees it as a community. Instead of seeing comedy as a competition, she views it as a community where comedians support each other enthusiastically.

Whether she's organizing festivals, mentoring new comics through Joker's Wild, or opening for nationally recognized headliners, Joy continues investing in stand-up across New Mexico. As her audience grows, so does her online presence.
