Desert Rose Rebels Bring Heritage, Heart and a Distinctive Sound to New Mexico’s Music Scene

Music carries history and can tell stories about where we come from. It can reflect the people and places that shaped us, and create something entirely new from the sounds that came before. For the Desert Rose Rebels, that connection to heritage is at the heart of what they do.

Representing Santo Domingo and San Felipe Pueblo, the Native American country and blues band has developed a sound that blends its members' individual musical influences into something uniquely their own. While the band's current lineup and identity may be relatively recent, its roots stretch back years, beginning at the Santa Fe Indian School.

The band started with two original members, Ray and Aiden, who began performing together while attending the school. At the time, Desert Rose Rebels wasn't yet the name audiences would come to know. The lineup changed along the way. After several transitions, the group finally established the Desert Rose Rebels name in 2024 with the members who make up the band's current core. "So...there's been some switch out - there's been some changes," they shared. "We're just glad that we finally found the core group that we're able to form this sound with."

Finding that core group became an important part of developing the band's musical identity. The members allowed their individual tastes and influences to shape the music organically. "So our sound is kind of a combination between all of our music tastes," they explained. "Through our music tastes, we kind of form together what kind of songs we want to sing and cover and make it uniquely our own."

That evolution has also come from listening to other artists and bands and looking for ways to take familiar influences somewhere different. "We evolved through hearing other bands, seeing what they have in common and seeing how we can each do a different thing rather than be totally in the norm." That willingness to step outside the expected has helped define Desert Rose Rebels as they continue establishing themselves within New Mexico's music community.

For the band members, the journey itself has created plenty of memorable moments. One member jokingly pointed to simply keeping pace with the rest of the group as a highlight. "Yes, for me, I think just being able to keep up with these guys is memorable."

But the band's growth is perhaps most evident in the response they've received from audiences. Their 2026 graduation reception performances have been particularly significant, with the event growing substantially compared with previous years. "For the band, probably this year, the 2026 graduation reception has been awesome. It's probably doubled this year or maybe tripled."

That growth isn't happening only in front of live audiences. Social media has become an increasingly important way for the band to connect with listeners and let people know where they will be performing. "Reestablishing that social media presence is one of our top priorities, mainly because that's how we get the word out and stuff like that, and that's how things get spread."

The band has already taken its music to a variety of public and private events, including performances in Gallup and at Sky City Casino, where the group currently has a residency. That relationship will bring the Desert Rose Rebels back for a three-day event later this month. "We're actually going to be going back there at the end of this month for a three-day event on September 27th, 28th and the 29th."

The band is also preparing for an exciting opportunity at the New Mexico State Fair, where Desert Rose Rebels is scheduled to perform on opening day, September 10.

For a group that has spent years evolving its lineup, refining its sound, and building its audience, opportunities like these represent another step forward.

The band's music carries the influence of its members' individual tastes while remaining connected to the heritage they represent. Rather than allowing those influences to exist separately, Desert Rose Rebels brings them together, creating music that feels personal to the musicians while inviting audiences into the experience.

That sense of authenticity is important in an industry where artists can sometimes feel pressure to sound like everyone else. Desert Rose Rebels is instead finding its identity by doing the opposite—taking the elements that inspire each member and discovering what happens when those influences meet.

And there is clearly more to come.

From their beginnings at Santa Fe Indian School to their current performances across New Mexico, Desert Rose Rebels have taken a winding road to discover their sound.
