Blank Conversations Opens New Doors for New Mexico Theatre

Every theatre company begins with a story. Some are born from decades of experience, while others emerge from a single idea that refuses to let go. For Blank Conversations, that story began with a group of passionate high school students who believed New Mexico audiences deserved something different.
Rather than waiting for opportunities to appear, they decided to create them.
Today, Blank Conversations has become one of Albuquerque's most innovative theatre companies, producing bold performances, reimagining classic works, and making the performing arts more accessible for artists and audiences alike.
Guided by its motto, "Make Art Happen," the organization has built a reputation for challenging expectations while proving that creativity has no age limit. For co-founder Gus Sanchez, the company's origin wasn't driven by frustration as much as clarity. He and his fellow founders knew the type of theatre they wanted to experience—and the kind they wanted to create. "I think part of it was all of us collectively had to understand what kind of theater we liked and the kind of theater we liked putting on," Sanchez explained.
That shared vision became the foundation for Blank Conversations. The group had already earned the trust of people within the local theatre community, but launching an entirely new company required asking audiences to believe in something that hadn't yet been built. "We asked our audience to trust us," he said.
They did.
What started as an ambitious idea quickly evolved into a company known for fearless storytelling and productions that encourage audiences to experience theatre in unexpected ways. At the center of everything Blank Conversations produces is its philosophy of making theatre accessible—not simply by lowering financial barriers, but by creating opportunities for anyone with a desire to create. For Sanchez, "Make Art Happen" is more than a slogan. It's a reminder that artistic talent exists everywhere, even when opportunity does not. "It's our principle that people, no matter what their background is, are capable of making art happen," he said. "They just don't have the right tools, the right time, or the right environment."
Instead of accepting those limitations, Blank Conversations works to remove them. Sanchez compares opportunity to a doorway. Sometimes the door is locked. Sometimes someone else is holding it shut. And sometimes the door simply doesn't exist. "When that happens," he said with a smile, "you just make a new door."
That simple philosophy has become one of the company's defining characteristics, inspiring artists to take risks rather than wait for permission. That creative spirit is evident throughout the company's productions.
Upcoming performances include The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised] [Again], a fast-paced comedy that condenses all 37 Shakespeare plays into a wildly entertaining theatrical experience. While rooted in the Bard's legendary works, the production encourages performers to reinterpret centuries-old material through a modern lens, making Shakespeare approachable for audiences who may never have experienced his plays before.
At the opposite end of the theatrical spectrum is Mr. Burns, a thought-provoking production inspired by The Simpsons that explores how pop culture evolves into mythology over generations. Rather than treating the animated sitcom simply as comedy, the play imagines a future in which familiar television episodes become the oral traditions of a changed civilization. "It's examining what pop culture will look like in the far future," Sanchez explained. "It uses The Simpsons almost like a Greek tragedy."
The result is exactly the kind of ambitious storytelling that has become synonymous with Blank Conversations—unexpected, imaginative, and impossible to ignore. The company's commitment to accessibility extends well beyond traditional stage productions.
Its popular Shadowcast performances combine live actors with beloved cult films, transforming classics like The Muppet Movie, Moulin Rouge!, and The Lost Boys into immersive theatrical experiences where cinema and live performance collide.
Meanwhile, Brews with the Bard offers audiences a more relaxed introduction to Shakespeare and other classic works.
The concept is refreshingly simple: gather together, enjoy a drink, and discover that centuries-old stories can still feel remarkably relevant.
Sanchez notes that Shakespeare originally wrote for everyday people, many of whom spent as much time in taverns as they did anywhere else. By recreating that communal atmosphere, the company hopes to remove the intimidation that sometimes surrounds classical theatre. It is another example of Blank Conversations meeting audiences where they are instead of expecting audiences to adapt first.
Education has become another cornerstone of the organization's mission. Through its newest initiative, The Empty Studio, Blank Conversations offers workshops in acting, music, technical theatre, design, and other performing arts disciplines. Designed to be low-cost—or free whenever possible—the program provides aspiring artists with opportunities to learn directly from experienced professionals. The goal isn't simply to teach theatre. It's to ensure that anyone with the desire to create has access to the knowledge and resources needed to begin.
For Sanchez, the future of New Mexico's arts community depends on making those opportunities available today.
As Blank Conversations continues to grow, it remains driven by the same passion that inspired a group of students to build something entirely their own. The company has never been interested in following someone else's blueprint. Instead, it continues creating new pathways for artists, audiences, and storytellers to connect through live performance.
In doing so, Blank Conversations is proving that some of the most exciting theatre isn't created by waiting for the next opportunity—it begins by making one.
