Finding your purpose doesn’t always happen on the first try. Sometimes it takes time, experience, and knowing when to change directions when the right opportunity appears. For Carissa Mitchell, that moment didn’t come until later in life—but when it did, it changed everything. “This is a second act for me,” she shares. Long before launching her agency, Mitchell had her sights set on the entertainment industry. Growing up, she dreamed of becoming a producer, but life led her down a different path. She pursued an art degree, built a career in graphic design, and focused on raising her family. Still, that creative pull never fully disappeared.
It wasn’t until she was in Albuquerque, surrounded by New Mexico’s rapidly growing film industry, that something clicked. “I was like, wait a second - the film industry is all around me here in New Mexico. I need to do something else,” she recalls. On a whim, she enrolled in a CNM Film Program. This moment would reshape her career. What she discovered there wasn’t just a new skill set, but a sense of connection she’d realized had been missing. “I literally went the first night and then cried because I found my people that I wanted 20 or 25 years earlier,” she says.
Initially drawn to casting, Mitchell connected with actors in a deeper way. She saw something in New Mexico talent that others often overlooked—dedication, experience, and potential that deserved more recognition.
“I started falling in love with the actors in New Mexico,” she explains. That connection would lead to an unexpected opportunity. When she learned that Mitchell Talent Agency was quietly for sale, she took a leap of faith—despite having no prior experience running an agency. “I sent a lowball offer and had never done it before in my life,” she says. “But I have this ‘I think I can do anything’ gene.”
What began as a planned one-month apprenticeship turned into something much bigger. “After a day and a half, she said, ‘You got this… I’m gone,” Mitchell recalls. That moment in 2011 marked the beginning that would define her career and help reshape opportunities for actors across New Mexico.
At the time, the local acting community faced several challenges. Many performers were trained, but often overlooked in favor of talent from larger markets. Mitchell recognized that for New Mexico actors to compete, the approach had to change.
“They had to compete with L.A. actors… and L.A. casting directors had to see their stuff,” she says. That meant raising the bar, improving headshots, training, self-taping, and understanding the industry's realities. It also meant building a support system in collaboration rather than competition. “I think we just linked arms together and figured it out,” she says.
The results speak for themselves. Today, New Mexico actors represented by her agency are booking major roles—series regulars, recurring characters, and leading roles in film. But Mitchell is quick to credit the actors themselves. “I have to credit the local acting pool for really seeing what had to happen in order for them to be competitive in this market,” she says.
Her approach to representation is extremely personal. Not only looking for talent, but she was also searching for long-term relationships. “I have to sit down and have coffee… I’m just seeing if I like them,” she says candidly. Because for Mitchell, this work goes beyond contracts and bookings. It’s about trust, communication, and understanding the realities of an unpredictable industry. “Understanding the business in a pragmatic way is really important,” she explains. That honesty makes her unique, and is why her agency has built such a strong reputation within the New Mexico film community.
More than a talent agency, Mitchell Talent is a hub for connection, growth, and opportunity.“We really do love our actors. We really do care… we try to create community & connection together,” she says. It is at the heart of everything she’s built—and it reflects the larger spirit of New Mexico’s creative industry.
For Mitchell, success isn’t just measured in bookings or credits. It’s measured in the growth of the people she represents and the strength of the community they’re building together. Sometimes finding your purpose isn’t about where you start—it’s finally finding where you belong.
