Some theaters show movies. Others create moments that stay with you long after the credits roll. The Guild Cinema has always been the latter—a place where film isn’t just watched, but experienced collectively, intimately, and often unexpectedly.

For owner Keif Henley, that connection to film started long before he ever held the keys to the historic Nob Hill theater. What began as a simple opportunity turned into something much bigger. “I was doing Basement Films… and I went to the Guild looking for a friend,” he recalls. “She said, ‘I need somebody to work on a Monday.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, I have Monday open… I’ll work for less than minimum wage.’”

That moment—equal parts chance and determination—set everything in motion. What followed wasn’t instant ownership, but a slow, steady commitment. “I just stuck around. I showed up to work on time. I tried to pay attention to how everything worked… and people just kind of moved on… and I stuck with it.”

That persistence is part of what defines The Guild today. It’s not built on flash or scale—it’s built on presence, passion, and a deep love for cinema.

And for Henley, film itself has always carried a kind of magic that goes far beyond entertainment.

“Films can transport you. They can transform things. They can be the magical dream box to take you away… but they can also wake you up and give you a critical apparatus.”

That duality—the ability to both escape and confront reality—is at the heart of The Guild’s programming. It’s a space where audiences aren’t just passively consuming content, but actively engaging with it.

And maybe most importantly, they’re doing it together. “Being in a dark room with friends and strangers… all paying attention in the same direction—it’s one of the few places in society we get to do that,” Henley explains. “It becomes this kind of collective, interesting experience.”

That sense of shared experience is increasingly rare in a world dominated by streaming and solo viewing. But at The Guild, it’s still the point. The theater has carved out a distinct identity over the years—one that leans into the unexpected, the unconventional, and the deeply creative. “It’s cozy and intimate,” Henley says. “And it’s a movie theater where we get to see things that you wouldn’t see at a lot of other places… things that are not necessarily spoon-fed to us.”

That philosophy shows up in every corner of its programming. From experimental cinema and international films to cult classics and local showcases, The Guild refuses to be boxed into one category. “Our moniker is eclectic cinema, seven days a week,” he adds.

And that eclecticism isn’t just a branding choice—it’s a mission. It’s about curiosity. Discovery. Taking risks on stories that might not have a place anywhere else. “You can travel vicariously through movies,” Henley says. “There are a lot of places in this world I may not be able to go to, but I might be able to get some semblance of what’s going on there.”

That idea—that film can expand your world—feels especially relevant in a city like Albuquerque, where the creative community continues to grow and evolve. The Guild plays a vital role in that ecosystem, giving both audiences and artists a space to explore, question, and connect. And even now, it continues to push forward. Henley remains passionate about spotlighting “the weird, the wonderful, and the different,” bringing in films and double features that challenge expectations and celebrate creativity in all its forms. Because at the end of the day, The Guild isn’t trying to compete with mainstream theaters—it’s preserving something that’s becoming increasingly rare. A place where stories are shared in real time. Where strangers become an audience - where film still feels like an event. In a world that’s moved toward convenience, The Guild stands firmly in experience. And that’s exactly why it matters.
