NME After Print: The 92nd Oscar Nominations
This morning, John Cho and Issa Rae took on the task of announcing this year's nominees for the 92nd Annual Academy Awards. There were some notable snubs and well-deserved nods handed out this morning. The expected nominations of Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, and Joker for Best Picture shouldn't have surprised fans. The absence was noticed of such films that received praise, but no recognition, like Hustlers, Honey Boy and Us, along with acting nominations for Shia LaBouf, Lupita Nyong’o, and Jennifer Lopez
The Oscars always comes with its controversy as the #MeToo movement gained momentum, causing a rise of voices in terms of women directors and artists not only being respected, but recognized for their achievements. As well as Black actors, directors, and others speaking out on the lack of diversity during the Oscar season. The "Best Director" category this year has been dominated by the men. Not one female director was nominated, despite amazing work from such directors as Alma Har'el (Honey Boy), Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), just to name a few. Rae even acknowledge the nominations saying, “Congratulations to those men," after the nominees were announced.
