February 2019 - The 5: Gene Grant

This month we sat down with journalist, writer and all-round amazing human being Gene Grant. Get to know him in 5 questions.

Let's get this out of the way, how are you feeling about our current political climate, specifically the results of this last midterm elections?

I’m feeling pretty positive about it actually. The country has spoken. Our system of governance had its say. It’s always frustrated me how midterms have been so unimportant to voters. That’s all changed now.

Congrats on New Mexico in Focus. How have some of the stories that guests have shared inspired you?

I’m actually overloaded with inspiration! The simple fact is there are some incredible people here working against long odds and little resources...but they get up and get it done every day. It’s incredible. There’s a lot of responses for people here to say the heck with it and move on, but they don’t. These are the people who are going to change this city.

Are there any people that you specifically would like to have as a guest on New Mexico in Focus?

There’s a long list of politicos, entertainers, you name it. After almost 15 years there’s not many locally I’m looking to interview, but you never know. If I had to pick one, it’d have to be President Obama.

Are there any goals that you are hoping to accomplish that you have not achieved yet?

I’m always grinding on my skills to improve. It never stops. I’m my own harshest critic and watch the broadcasts with a brutal eye. My goal is always to improve. This game moves fast.

What words of advice to you have for individuals hoping to join the journalism field?

It’s an honorable field. Even more so in these times and I hope young people looking to make a difference in the world will still consider journalism an avenue for that. It’s an intensely satisfying field to work in.
