September 2017 - The Art World: Happy Anniversary, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

This summer marked the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s 20th anniversary. For two decades, the Museum has been a local institution with a global reach, celebrating a great American artist with a great American story.

Since its 1997 opening, the Museum has welcomed over 3,469,425 visitors from around the world. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s campus has expanded beyond its main gallery site in Santa Fe to include a Research Center, an Education Annex, andO’Keeffe’s historic Abiquiú Home and Studio.

In addition to its growth in the United States, the Museum has partnered with cultural institutions around the world on international exhibitions, such as last year’s Georgia O’Keeffe retrospective at the Tate Modern in the United Kingdom. Currently, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum has collaborative exhibitions in Canada and Australia. It is also a collaborator on the Brooklyn Museum’s lauded Living Modern exhibition, featuring the artist’s clothing from the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s collections.

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum also emphasizes regional impact through partnerships. It is one of the participants in this summer’s Art of the Draw, a multi-venue exploration of drawing and creativity organized by New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. Further community engagement drives initiatives such as New Mexico residents’ free admission to monthly First Friday programs.

Through July, the Museum hosted anniversary events at its Santa Fe sites and around the city. Visitors have the ability to take part in special programs and ongoing features. Guests can continue to explore the Museum’s thematic galleries. Since the beginning of this year, these galleries have provided insight into Georgia O’Keeffe’s life and art, focusing on her significant eras, places, and creative developments. Details and registration are at okeeffemuseum.org/events.
