November 2016 - Let Us Entertain You: Mariachi Christmas

The 18th annual performance of Mariachi Christmas is a highlight of the New Mexican holiday season bringing dynamic dance, swirling dresses, lively violins, and the clear peal of trumpets. Talented musicians and dancers light up the Popejoy stage on Sunday, December 11, at 3 pm.

Since 1999, Popejoy has supported the tradition of mariachi music in New Mexico by presenting Mariachi Christmas, a New Mexican holiday favorite. Popejoy invites bands and dance troupes from all over Mexico and the Southwestern United States to join in the holiday celebration. Each year, the show provides audience members with the opportunity to experience elements of an authentic Mexican Christmas. This year Mariachi Juvenil Aztlan University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and Ballet Folklórico UTRGV join together to bring an explosive Mariachi Christmas performance to the stage.

Appearing for the first time at Popejoy Hall, Ballet Folklórico UTRGV and Mariachi Juvenil Aztlán will headline the show. The two groups have an extensive performance relationship, previously appearing together at both the American College Dance Association (ACDA) South Conference and the National Conference. Mariachi Juvenil Aztlán, UTRGV’s up and coming Mariachi group, has already enjoyed enormous success, placing first in their category at the 2015 Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza (Texas’ largest mariachi festival) in San Antonio.

Tickets for Mariachi Christmas are currently on sale for $49, $41, $31, and $20.
