June 2018 - Cover Story: Maria Bamford

The old phrase, "Write what you know," was created for Maria Bamford. The comedian has taken her life experiences and created some of the greatest moments on stage and television. As Bamford prepares for her performance on June 29th at The Santa Ana Star Casino, we had the opportunity to ask a few questions about her inspirations, upcoming projects, and her legacy. What was childhood like for you? Was comedy ingrained for you? I was pretty shy. I loved listening to Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy and watched SNL with my Dad. My parents are ridiculous, but I never thought of comedy as a career. What is your inspiration when it comes to comedy? How do you prepare? Sometimes I am not inspired. I

June 2018 - Let Us Entertain You: A Q&A with Mark

From some of our readers who may not know of you and your talented works, tell us a little bit about your history, influences and when theatre became a passion for you? I was born in Mt. Carmel, IL, the closest hospital to Grayville, where my father, just out of medical school, was the only doctor. We were also the only Jews in Grayville, a town of seven thousand at that time because of the oil boom in Southern Illinois. I never remember feeling there was any bias against us; quite the opposite, I felt my father and mother were revered, and therefore my brother Bud and I were assumed to be good little boys. We moved to Louisville when I was seven so my dad could finish his residency, then t

June 2018 - Let Us Entertain You: The King and I

Two worlds collide in the breathtaking musical, The King and I, one of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works. Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British school teacher whom the forward-thinking King brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. The King and I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance,” and “Something Wonderful.” Directed by Tony Award® winner Bartlett Sher, The King and I won four 2015 Tony Awards® including Best Revival of a Musical. The product

June 2018 - Make 'Em Laugh: Greg's Comedy Basement

Skater, punk, future doctor, the original silly boy, comedian, Greg Ziomek wears many different hats. He’s lived in different places in the United States but calls Albuquerque home. He’s been a stand-up comedian for just under 2 years, and now he produces two of Albuquerque’s most popular shows. For this interview Greg shows up looking clean shaven and well-kempt, a handsome young man, whom others have said has a passing resembl

June 2018 - The Sports Connection: Duke City Roller Derby

It’s brass, bold and in your face. If you haven’t experienced roller derby in New Mexico, you are missing out. One organization determined to educate the state on the coolest sport known to man is Duke City Roller Derby. We had the opportunity to sit down with players Kells Inferno and Kap’n Krush to talk about how the organization began and why roller derby is the place to be. What is it about roller derby that excites you? The fast-paced action, the strategy, the challenge of playing offense and defense at the same time, the hits, and traveling to play other leagues. I also love feeling strong and powerful, equipped to take on anything the world may throw at me. How was Duke City Roller De

June 2018 - Between the Pages: New Mexico BB-40 and New Mexico's Navy

It is summer so thoughts travel to the NAVY? Really? Did you know there was a USS Torrance County, SS Navajo Victory, USNS Pecos, USS Albuquerque, SS Archbishop Lamy, and many more? I am not a lover of ships but I found it fascinating that New Mexico, a landlocked state, has so much Naval history. The USS New Mexico BB-40, is another book in Arcadia’s Images of America series. It has a multitude of pictures from the silver service on the ship, flags, people, and of course the USS New Mexico. Sadly, the USS New Mexico was scrapped but not her history. In New Mexico’s Navy, the whole history of ships named for people and places in New Mexico is fleshed out with pictures and text. Everybody is

June 2018 - The Cut: El Cotorro

Let me start by saying that not all tacos are created equal. "Taco Tuesday" should be a blessed day and treated as such. So, when it comes to where the day should be spent, a friend suggest El Cotorro (I just knew it as the place that had the parrot on a card). By the time I left, I was disappointed that I didn’t step foot in this establishment sooner. Their restaurant, nestled on the corner of Carlisle and Copper, offers a warm atmosphere the minute you walk through the door. The staff was quick to greet us - letting us know that they would be with us in a moment. During that time, we checked out their menu and had the difficult decision of figuring out what we would partake in. They have a
