March 2018 - Cover Story: The "High"namic Duo - Cheech & Chong

When it comes to the art of Stoner Comedy, no one does it better than the Godfathers of the genre, Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong. Their chance meeting in Canada back in the late 1960s has provided the world with earth-shaking laughter and memorable catchphrases. Excited to learn that they would be stepping foot on New Mexico soil, playing Inn of The Mountain Gods on March 16th, I had to take the opportunity to learn more about these two legendary performers - their rise to fame, and their comedy partnership that has lasted for over 40 years. The moment I got on the phone with Cheech Marin he had me laughing. I asked, “What did you want to be when you grew up?” He said, “Employed”. M

“One, singular sensation…” It’s all you need to hear and you know the rest of the song and the musical it comes from. Since 1975, A Chorus Line has become one of the most beloved musicals of all time and Popejoy Hall is bringing it to their stage from March 8th-11th. In the classic story, casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete, and for 17 dancers, this audition is the chance of a lifetime and what they’ve been working their whole lives for. A Chorus Line brilliantly evokes both the glamour and the dark underbelly of showbiz, and resonates with everyone who has ever had a dream and put it all on the line. The iconic score features such classics as “What I Did for Love”, ”I Hope

March 2018 - Make 'Em Laugh: The NM Inquisition

The NM Inquisition, now in its second season, is New Mexico’s first, best, and only news comedy show. The brainchild of comedian Danger K Varoz, The NM Inquisition—or NMINQ—is 100% a comedy show, but it has some lofty goals. “We want to get the message out about voting locally and staying plugged into the grassroots movements that are going on all around you,” says Varoz. Head Writer Ann Gora agrees. “I am in love with Albuquerque and New Mexico,” she says. “I think if we are able to make local politics fun, we can get more people involved.” The show draws inspiration from the likes of The Daily Show, Samantha Bee, and HBO’s Real Time. NMINQ began humbly on YouTube, but after its first ep

March 2018 - Now Showing: NM Italian Film and Culture Festival

Italian Festivals of New Mexico is back with their 11th annual New Mexico Italian Film and Culture Festival. Created in 2007, the festival has championed the state’s underserved and disadvantaged children with donations totaling close to $300,000 to child-focused institutions and organizations. As in 2017, 2018’s festival proceeds will benefit NDI New Mexico.* President and Managing Director, Maria Arancio Berry shared why the festival is still going strong after 11 years and the passion those involved with the event have to see it be a success. “The festival is the largest, longest-running Italian event in the state. That’s as a result of a convergence of a lot of elements,” says Berry. “F

March 2018 - Between the Pages: Hazel Thornton - Hung Jury: The Diary of a Menéndez Juror

Hazel Thornton seems like your everyday neighbor next door. She is the owner of her organization business, Organized For Life, and a constant staple when it comes to networking. So, imagine our surprise when we discovered that the woman we’ve known for years was on one of the highest profile cases of 1994. The story of the Menéndez Brothers and how they brutally killed their parents in August of 1989 was the story on television screens across the world and Thornton was front and center as one of the jurors on the first Menéndez trial. The experience left Thornton with a head full of memories and written pages of the experience. Those pages become the topic of her book, Hung Jury: The Diary o

March 2018 - Follow-Up: WWE Live Road to Wrestlemania - Santa Ana Star Center

The night after Overdrive Publications put on our Rocky Horror Picture Show Valentine’s Day Screening, the second screening at that, Teresa and I went to a wrestling show. Not just any wrestling show, a WWE Smackdown Live Event, and not just any WWE Smackdown Live Event; but a Road to Wrestlemania WWE Smackdown Live Event. This was going to be a big deal. With that in mind, and a need to cheer for my new best friend, WWE Superstar Becky Lynch (I get to call her Becky), we dragged our tired bodies down to the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho to take in some wrestling. Live Events are a very special thing in wrestling. The wrestlers are a lot more relaxed, they have a little more fun, and n

March 2018 - Extras: The Effect

West End Productions kicks off its third thrilling season with Lucy Prebble’s brilliant, surreal and achingly moving play, The Effect. She subtitles this startling piece with the tagline: “A play for four people, in love and sorrow.” But what is truly startling is that Prebble has written a shocker about two pairs of star-crossed lovers, framed with a scathing examination of Big Pharma and set amid grueling clinical drug tests. Romantic? YES! Erotic? YES! Thought provoking? YES! Funny? YES! YES! YES! True to West End’s mission of bringing the best plays from the British Isles to New Mexico - we are proud to introduce Albuquerque to one of England’s finest and most exciting young playwrights.
