November 2017 - Cover Story: The Magical Stylings of Piff The Magic Dragon

Part of my Summer routine is watching the world’s largest talent competition, America’s Got Talent. Last season introduced America to an interesting character by the name of Piff The Magic Dragon. Armed with a chihuahua, a magic box and a sandwich, Piff performed the most interesting magic tricks while having you in stitches at the same time. Making it to the Top 10 of the competition and solidifying himself as a fan-favorite, New Mexico will have the opportunity to see Piff live and in person at The Stage So, how did the creation of Piff The Magic Dragon begin? I went to a costume party as a dragon. No one turned up in costume. After an hour of looking very grumpy in a dragon outfit, someon

November 2017 - Let Us Entertain You: Keshet Brings "Alice" to the stage

Just one year after we said goodbye to a New Mexico staple, Nutcracker on the Rock, Shira Greenberg, Founder & Artistic Director of Keshet Dance, didn’t wait any time to bring a new show to the stage inspired from a childhood classic. Alice, an adventure of wonder and wondering is a dance performance and live arts experience for the whole family, incorporating a lively score, with great classic rock, jazz, and more! Greenberg’s latest creation took less than a year to create. “It's been about a 10 month process,” Greenberg shared. “After Nutcracker on the Rocks closed last December, I began working on the idea, concepts, story-line, musical selections, etc. Then we starting some preliminar

November 2017 - Turn it Up: DED

DED, a band proving they are more than your average “rock” band, made a stop in Albuquerque back in September and left an impression with fans. We had the opportunity to sit down with lead singer Joe Cotela to talk about how the band came together and what they’re adding to the music scene. How did the band come together? It all started with us having coffee talking about how we aren't hearing a lot of newer heavy bands with good universal songwriting mixed with brutally heavy parts. We wanted to start a band that we weren't hearing. We came together and made music we wanted to hear. Who are your influences? There are a lot, but to name a few: Bring Me the Horizon, Slipknot, Gojira, A Day

November 2017 - Make 'Em Laugh: Rod Man

It’s been 3 years since we last interview Rod Man after taking home the win on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. When we found out that he was making a trip back to New Mexico, we thought it was about time to follow-up and see what he’s been up to. Great to see you back in New Mexico. How has life been since we last spoke with you after winning Last Comic Standing? Life is “fair to middling slightly above average, the check engine light is finally off in my car, cause I hate when that light comes on it could be anything. We are living in an interesting time right now politically. Has any of that entered your sets? It enters my set, and I usher it out pretty quickly. I think we’re going to need more

November 2017 - An NME Q&A: Unicorn Productions

Where did the inspiration come from to create Unicorn Productions? The inspiration to create Unicorn Productions stemmed from the desire to create shows centered on the concept of “magical," whimsical environments, emphasizing acceptance and a safe place for people of all gender identities. The unicorn represents all spectrums of gender and sexuality identities, encouraging self-expression, creativity, and belief in one's self. Part of our mission is to create high-quality shows with top-notch performances while also giving our students the opportunity to grow and learn in these arenas, as UP is currently the only local team offering burlesque classes. Everyone seems to offer a specific tale

November 2017 - Follow-Up: SOMOS

On a cloudy Saturday night, downtown Albuquerque transformed into a festival featuring local artist and musician alongside national acts. SOMOS The first festival of its kind shut down Central Ave and erect four large stages. There was a $10 entry fee if you purchased your tickets in advance, they were $12 at the door. Even with the rain, hundreds flooded into the festival through a wanded security check. There were also plenty of police and security personal wandering through the streets. There were vendors set up down the center of Central Ave selling everything from handcrafted jewelry to solar panels for your roof. On the sides of the road were interactive art installations. My personal

Rustic. That word doesn’t quite describe the feelings you get when you are at the Jemez Bathhouse.
