May 2017 - Turn It Up: Life After Beard

Fans of the local band, Beard, we always enjoyed what the band had to give us. So it wasn’t a surprise that we wanted to find out what makes them tick. What did surprise us is that Beard decided to disband in January of this year. But since, as musicians, music flows through their veins, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to find out what it was like being a member of Beard and what life after the band had in store. Mauricio Paez (Vocals, Guitar), Abel Robledo (Drums), and Karie Morgan (Guitar) were cool enough to take part. Mauricio Paez (Vocals, Guitar) What is life after Beard like? Life has been good. Robyn shared a bit about her love for art and where we can experience her gorgeous work. Where did you love of art come from? I think I was born with it. I’ve always been attracted to art, beautiful pictures, and everything visual. I’m a very visual thinker. What I love about art is the way you can exaggerate the things you see and transform them. Awalt is the co-founder of The New Mexico Book Co-op, a partnership of over 1,500 local authors and publishers. The partnership's sole purpose is to showcase and sell local books. “The idea for the Co-op came from a meeting at the Albuquerque Press Club,” shared Awalt. “A number of us were mad that opportunities were not available for book people to network and hear the current trends. We were told, up front, that book people would not work together, and, obviously, that isn't true. We have had shows, events, and [we] promote each other in these very hard t

May 2017 - Extras: Duke City Comic Con

After two successful conventions, Jim Burleson, creator of Albuquerque and Santa Fe Comic Con, has taken a bold step in producing Duke City Comic Con. The decision, he says, was an easy one. “Fans started off the resurgence of comic cons with both a winter and a summer show,” says Burleson. “When the summer event folded, we found countless attempts to run a summer show fail and disappoint the fans, so the reason for Duke City [Comic Con] is two-fold. We know there is at least a vocal demand for a summer event that isn’t being met by a promoter. Wizard canceled 3 times now. I want to fill that need for our community.” Duke City is being held at the Embassy Suites, making this event exclusive

Photo by M. West Photography What the world needs now is more comedy, and nobody knows that better than Royal A. Woods III. Woods took a moment to sit down with New Mexico Entertainment and share where his love of comedy came from and what upcoming projects are coming his way. Where did your love of comedy come from? My love of comedy came from my father. We would watch old Jamie Foxx and Sinbad sets and just crack up. Also, the SNL run with Will Ferrell and Tina Fey were my favorite shows to watch. Do you remember your first gig? What was it like? My first gig was actually my first time behind a microphone as a comedian. My set wasn't really polished well, but I felt confident on stage, whi

April 2017 - Now Showing : Logan

Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, reveals the depth of his character in the fifth and final installment of Marvel’s Wolverine series, entitled Logan. I purposely held off on reading the synopsis of the movie, which left me wondering what I should expect. Entering the theater, I prepared myself for what the final chapter of this beloved character would bring. After some time, I still find myself in awe of the masterpiece I witnessed: Time and age have caught up with Logan, slowing down the claws and reflexes, at times. He has taken on the responsibility of looking after Xavier (Professor X), who is suffering from seizures that are earth-shaking, to say the least. Mutants are now on the endan

Toy of the Gods follows the story of Leslie Kicklighter as she and a group of tourists are stranded in the Amazon by a recently awakened Incan god. They’ll have to make it back to civilization on foot past bandits, angry villagers, and drunken monkeys. And what does a writer from New Mexico know about the Amazon? A few years ago, I sold most of my belongings, moved out of my apartment, and, with my best friend, headed to Costa Rica, Panama, and Peru for seven weeks. I had seven days in the Amazon basin in Peru, and it was amazing! When we got off the boat in the Amazon, a long grey snake slithered across the muddy path. Just the kind of atmosphere I needed for an adventure novel. While there
